Whenever I travel to the lakes I always take timeout to visit this fascinating nursery, you can guarantee you will see something you've never clapped eyes on before,so in that respect it's well worth a look.
DO NOT ORDER ONLINE! I was thrilled to find Larch Cottage because of their wide range of hard to find plants, so I got a bit carried away and ordered quite a few. I even phoned up and added to my order and the girl on the phone was very helpful. However, I was disappointed on receipt because 3 of the plants were very sickly looking and I would never have touched them in a nursery had I been able to choose for myself, and I was a little shocked that these had been sent to me. I took photos immediately and sent them to Larch Cottage. Photos are attached. My concern are the red specks which look like scale insect. See how they are along the veins on some of the leaves. A slug had also been included in the package and had had a good feed too!The response from Larch Cottage said that the plants were healthy, that the specks were seeds and that the plants could be chelsea chopped. They said I could return them if I preferred. At first I thought I may chop them but once my gardeners and gardening club members had seen them they all said they should be returned and the specks did look like scale insect. So I contacted Larch Cottage again and asked for a returns label. Once again their response was that the plants were healthy, that they grew the plants themselves and had done for 30 years so didn't have such problems. They were more than happy for me to return them myself but at my expense as they were healthy plants. So I am now stuck with 3 sick plants that cost me 24 and can't find a courier that will actually accept plants, so never again will I risk ordering from this business. This next bit is an update because once two of the geraniums I purchased finally flowered, they were clearly not what I had ordered. A shell pink flower with fine pink lines is actually a deep, bright pink. Very beautiful, but not what I paid money for. So not only do they send out poorly plants, they also mislabel plants too. I think another review already pointed this out.I'm sure the actual nursery is a beautiful place to visit and then you can choose your own plants, and the staff sound lovely, but the attitude of the owne, when it comes to sorting out problems, leaves a lot to be desired. And my review isn't the first one saying this.
A hidden Gem of a garden centre at Melkinthorpe, with a fantastic selection of plants, shrubs and trees.Very knowledgeable staff in attendance, with no question being to much trouble. Lovely positioned coffee shop with a balcony over looking the gardens and pond. The main cafe is spread over 2 floors, serving excellent food, with a well furnished courtyard serving drinks and food to the left of the cafe entrance. I find the plants from this particular nursery far more hardier than most and have not been disappointed yet. A must for garden lovers!
Day out with my mum to buy some shrubs. - well worth the drive from Manchester. Really helpful staff, amazing range of shrubs, and some very rare perennials, and some hydrangeas that I couldnt find anywhere else in the north. As a bonus, we had an absolutely gorgeous lunch. Thank you.
What a place!! Stunning gardens and super healthy plants. I have found plants here that your main stream nurseries never stock. Great cafe too!! Love it here, before you leave pop into Red Barn Gallery... fabulous!!
